Premier League Premier League 2012 Season Review
Supporters of United know just how James Magnussen felt when touched out by a fingernail for the gold in London. In our case, however, it was the privilege of playing in the premier league next season that was the “gold” and, like James, we ended up with the silver of amateur league.I wrote in last season’s report that even though the players who took the field each week never gave less than 100% our season ended early because we scored fewer goals than the team which was relegated. Our problem this year made a 180 degree turn – we conceded more goals (and gained fewer competition points) than any of the 20 teams in the Premier League with the exception of Manly Vale reserves who only eked out 2 draws from their 18 games. Yet, for all its flaws, United’s DNA contains resilience and I have little doubt that we shall return to the premier league in the not too distant future.
There were many games this season where we started brightly and the match appeared ready for the taking. But, far too often, where victory should have been straight forward we somehow conjured up a crisis and the result was another soul-destroying loss for the archives. I’m told the French like to say that “a pass is like a gift – on the end of every pass should be a solution, not a problem”. We must learn to be less generous with our “gifts” to the opposition. Possession may be 9/10th of the law but it is useless on a football pitch unless you can fashion something from it. Often we appeared to be caught out of position and reduced to mere spectators whilst our defence became stretched like the strap on a cheap bra. Up front we created enough chances to win many matches but the misses so synonymous with Manly-Allambie last season again left the door ajar for our opponents to collect all the points. A couple of games reminded me of The Stepford Wives – a movie so bad that by the time I got out of the cinema they had already taken down the sign, sold all the posters and released it on DVD. Supporters often felt sorry for coach Graeme who, on the sidelines in the freezing temperatures, was often sweating more than Paris Hilton doing a Sodoku puzzle.
Even though it may seem that on football’s journey of self discovery we have come to a cul-de-sac the green shoots of recovery are at least visible. There is a lot of individual talent in the squad and many other promising youngsters within the Club. Held together by Jared, Bertie, Andy, Danny and Nathan I can see Manly-Allambie achieving success sooner rather than later. By having Jared in the side we have two players in almost every position – he runs faster than Ben Cousins from a specimen jar. Still, no-one can be a team by themselves and next season a solution will have to be found to the collaboration between midfield and attack where control often appeared lost.
The “runners-up” for my choice of “goal of the year” were both scored on the final day of the competition. First was Clacker’s lob where he connected with Mikey’s long pass and chipped the advancing keeper on the volley. Andy’s goal was of similar quality but his spectacular volley was all power and rocketed into the net. My top pick, however, goes to Jared’s first goal against Wakehurst. He followed a misdirected pass to the line when everyone thought it was about to cross for a goal kick and from a tight angle with a degree of difficulty beyond the realms of plausibility he smashed the ball between the keeper and the near post.
Coaches Graeme Lomas and Russell Rodgers had tough seasons with injuries and holidays wreaking their customary ravages on their rosters. At times the reserves bench was as empty as a catwalk model’s fridge. All players and supporters thank them for the time and effort they put into coaching the teams. That they have more grey hairs now than before the season started is as surprising as Christmas falling on December 25 this year. Thanks also to our tireless manager Zia who somehow managed to get both teams onto the paddock each week and to Rod Niven who was always there to assist. A big thank you to our sponsor the Brookvale Hotel and to our hardy supporters who usually outnumbered the home fans at our away games. And, finally, a very big thank you to the Committee of this wonderful Club without whose often unappreciated dedication Manly-Allambie would cease to exist.
We look forward to having all players and supporters back next season to cheer the boys on as they fight their way back to the premier league. Have a great summer.
