WHO WON "THE DOUBLE" - LEAGUE CHAMPIONS AND FINAL WINNERS!

The girls defeated a gutsy BTH team 3 - 1 after going behind 0 - 1 in the 2nd minute.
A fine goal by Ruby Searant a minute before half time levelled the scores.
Two goals in two minutes mid way throught the 2nd half by super striker, Cassie Rodgers, sealed a all round
team performance.

2011 Premier League Annual Report

So near yet so far! Supporting a team that regularly puts the chalice of glory to your lips only to drop it before you get to drink is as frustrating as going to a retirement home to explain why Paris Hilton is famous. Performing well against the top sides in the first round but dropping valuable points against the competition’s lesser lights meant that we needed a minor miracle to make the playoffs. Now miracles are great but so damn unpredictable and, in the end, whilst finishing a very creditable equal third in the competition we eventually missed the semis by a goal difference of one.

No-one will ever be able to claim that the players who took the field each week ever gave less than 100% but there is little doubt that the ultimate reason for our season ending at least one week too early was that we scored fewer  goals than even relegated Forest-Killarney. We were riding high behind champions Pittwater for most of round one but the misses and errors so synonymous with Manly-Allambie this year left the door ajar for others to squeeze in and push us out. Coach Graeme Lomas started the season with no sign of grey hair but even he was surely reaching for the Grecian Formula as our profligacy turned many games we had “in the bag” into another soul-destroying loss for the archives. Sitting on the sidelines I’ve learnt that the virtue of patience has bypassed me on the way to Mother Teresa as I waited for the apparent air turbulence in front of our opponents’ open goal to vanish but, to the end, our finishing continued to be as unreliable as the Cityrail timetables.

In many past reports I have written that our reserve grade contained enough talented individuals to give the competition a real shake but, as for some years now, they failed to gel and finished down the table. Many were called on to fill in for the top side during a long and difficult season and acquitted themselves well and team spirit in both grades remained high throughout. In the firsts Bertie, despite at times carrying more injuries than the Black Knight from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, had another good season between the sticks. The hardworking defenders in front of him appeared to have no other priority than to snap into opponents like guard dogs who have spotted an intruder and they gained respect from both friend and foe. Team captain Jared threw his heart into an unforgiving role as the team’s apex and has carried that attitude into every game – next season he may actually get a free kick when opponents use him for climbing or wood chopping practice. One referee, in particular, was as popular as Gary Glitter in the IKEA ball pit but we must learn to adapt to the man in the middle’s interpretation of the game in order to reduce the numerous free kicks we seem to concede and, too often, suffer their consequences. Having said all this it’s far from all doom and gloom – finishing equal third in a competition of such high standard as the MWFA Premier League is something this little club, it’s players, coaching staff and supporters can justifiably be proud of.

For my choice for goal of the year as second runner-up I picked Matt Piggott’s wonderful volley against Manly Vale which was hit so sweetly no goalkeeper could have saved it. Runner-up was Michael Kember’s middle goal from his hat-trick against Strikers when he controlled a wobbling ball in a run along the sideline and his powerful long range cross ended up in the top corner of the net. As my top pick I just had to pick Andy’s overhead scissors kick against Beacon Hill when he latched onto a cross by Jared in the box and the ball never looked like missing. The keeper’s jaw dropped so low he’s lucky it didn’t break his collarbone.

On our players’ and supporters’ behalf I’d like to thank Graeme Lomas and Russell Rodgers for the time and effort they put into coaching the teams. At times on the sidelines they looked as shattered as someone who’d been told they had to swap hair with Donald Trump but they shouted encouragement to their charges to the very end. Thanks also to our tireless manager Rob Hessell who yet again managed to get both teams onto the paddock each week and to Rod Niven and Bluey who were always there to assist. A big thank you to our sponsor the Brookvale Hotel and to the vocal supporters who appeared more numerous than the crowds around a portaloo during Octoberfest in Munich and usually outnumbered the home supporters at our away games. And a very big thank you to the committee of this wonderful club without whose often unappreciated dedication and hard work Manly-Allambie United would cease to exist.

We look forward to seeing all players and supporters returning in 2012 for another nail biting, heart-attack inducing but mostly enjoyable season in the Premier League.
